It’s built by this guy, David Xanatos, and it’s been around a while, going through a bunch of different companies – Sophos, Invincea, and Ronen Tzur. It’s open source, which is good.

So, the main thing is, you can run programs in this isolated space. Like, you can surf the web, or try out some potentially dodgy software, and if it crashes or messes things up, it doesn’t affect your actual computer. That’s the whole point, right?

They have two versions. There’s the “classical” one with a pretty basic interface, and then the “plus” build. The plus one has a new, different user interface – Q’t-based, apparently. You can use the new features in the classical version by tweaking a file called sandboxie.ini. It’s a bit of a headache, honestly, but it gives you more control.

It lets you run untrusted programs safely, test things out, and customize how it works. It’s like having a little bubble around your computer. Absolute madness, but useful.
