Western Digital is on track to roll out their first wave of hard drives garnished with heat-assisted magnetic recording (aka HAMR). We’re talking big numbers–crunching up to a colossal 80TB to 100TB of data. And guess what? They’re not stopping there. Fast forward to the next decade, and we’re looking at HDMR technology promising to take storage capacities to unthinkable heights–think 120TB or more.

So how do they plan to achieve this storage extravaganza? Well, imagine platters with a magnetic coating, featuring grains that dance around in size and shape. Traditional HDDs are constrained by these chaotic grains, which make it tough to pack bits real cozy-like. But the HDMR is going to flip the script with a fusion of heat-assisted writing and bit-patterned media (BPM), planning to squish areal densities toward an eye-popping 8 Tb/inch^2 and beyond.
