So, password managers, huh? Seems like everyone and their grandma has one these days. Oh, I can’t remember all my passwords! First world problems, am I right? I mean, back in my day, we used the same password for everything. And if we got hacked, we just blamed the Russians. Simpler times.
But seriously, there are so many goddamn password managers out there—it almost feels like you need a password manager for your password managers. This one guy I read about just keeps coming back to an open-source tool. Open source sounds kinda commie, don’t it? Just kidding. Mostly.
But here’s the thing: with closed-source password managers, you’re trusting some corporation with all your digital secrets. That’s like trusting your Tinder dating profile to your mother-in-law. What are they really doing with your data? Are they selling it to advertisers? Are they using it to train AI to write better spam emails? Who the hell knows? At least with open source, you could comb through the code. Assuming you know how to read code, which, let’s be honest, most people don’t. Yeah, neither do I; haha.
But that’s the point, someone could. And that’s the beauty of it. It’s that whole checks and balances thing, right? The power to the people kind of deal. So, you’re not just blindly trusting a faceless corporation someone else also has the power to keep them honest.
Think of it like this: It’s like the difference between buying a burger from McDonald’s and grilling one yourself. McDonald’s you have no freaking clue what’s in that thing. Probably floor sweepings and unicorn meat. But when you grill your own burger, you know exactly what went into it. Plus, you can add bacon. Always add bacon.
But, open-source ain’t a free pass. It still has its downsides – gotta be tech-savvy enough to set it up and maintain it. It ain’t as easy as downloading an app and clicking OK a bunch of times. And let’s be real ain’t nobody got time for that crap.
So why does any of this matter in your daily life? Well, your passwords are your digital keys to pretty much everything. Email, bank accounts, social media, your OnlyFans account (no judgement!). If those keys fall into the wrong hands, your life can go from Netflix and chill to identity theft and panic attacks real quick.
So choose wisely. Do you trust some corporation with your digital life? Or do you take the red pill, dive down the rabbit hole of open source, and hope you don’t get lost? It’s your call. Just don’t come crying to me when your nudes end up on Reddit. Okay, maybe do, they will eventually anyway, might as well be ready to laugh at them. But seriously; are we really as diligent as we THINK we are when it comes to our digital lives?
